Chapter 22

Rosa

This was not how I thought this project was going to unfold. When Doug told me the station was going to be working with Gavin and his office on the Fourth of July celebration, I thought it was going to be the most uncomfortable situation Doug could possibly throw me into. Even more uncomfortable than the very early days of the station when he had me interview sanitation workers while riding on the back of the truck and I nearly fell off. That was half an hour of sensory assault and potentially embarrassing as I tried desperately not to tumble to the pavement. This was going to be uncomfortable in a whole new way. The email I sent to Gavin at the beginning of the week was meant as a way to ease that discomfort and lay everything about working together out in the open so we could just focus on the work.

I’d laid it out in the open, alright. Rather than clarifying my thoughts about him and creating a more structured, professional atmosphere for us to work together in, I’d managed to push myself right over the edge into full-on feelings territory. We kept right up with the emails starting Tuesday morning, and by Thursday, I was a goner. I had to admit to myself I wasn’t just crushing on Gavin, carrying on the same silly schoolgirl attraction from when we were much younger. I was fucking smitten.

The last few days of communicating with Gavin completely changed the way I looked at and thought about him. The man was funny. How the hell did I not know he was funny? We’d been orbiting around each other for so long, and I’d spent a considerable amount of time with him away from work environments. Yet somehow, I’d never noticed his dry humor. The only time I ever saw him be even close to frivolous was at the swimming hole with the other guys swinging out into the water and splashing around. But I just chalked that up to guys being guys and the ridiculousness that happens when there’s a lot of testosterone in the area. I didn’t realize he genuinely had a sense of humor of his own.

Beyond the humor that surprised me so much, I was also discovering how creative and innovative he was. Our
